EXT.  HOLLYWOOD RESERVOIR  –  LUNCH

Say hello to Colin Johnson.

CYCLIST / INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY SPECIALIST

Three quick laps – an ideal lunchtime spin. Started clockwise over the bridge. While dialing in tunes, a cyclist approached from the other direction. Like two rams ready to go, we caught each others gaze. The moment passed as the music and legs started pumping full throttle.

At the end of the first lap, we came across each other at the exact same spot. This time, instead of being territorial, we both nodded in acknowledgement at the crazy timing. Noticed we were also sporting similar bike frames. We peddled on.

Next time around, it happened again. Same speed, same bike – so weird. Flagged him down and asked if we were brothers. We laughed, headed on our final lap together and began to chat.

WHY IS THE EVOLUTION OF THE HOLLYWOOD SCENE GOOD FOR THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY (IP) BUSINESS?

"The experts in the field are here. IP is a complex business & continues to develop. New precedents are set with new cases and many of those are adjudicated right here."

"In addition to the experts, this is also where the creative talent is. There's no better place than Hollywood. New York has it merits, but LA has the weather."

THE HOLLYWOOD SCENE IS FILLED WITH CREATORS OF ALL TYPES. WHAT'S SOMETHING ABOUT THEIR INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY THEY SHOULD KNOW?

"Every contract counts and owning what you create should always be the goal. You may need money to make your dreams become reality, but always remember that it was your dreams that made anyone interested in the project – not the money."

CAN YOU OFFER A TIP TO HELP THE HOLLYWOOD SCENE PROTECT OR PROMOTE THEIR INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY?

"Make sure the their brand, persona, website, stated goals and social media image all match up. Each element communicates something different to your fan base. If your audience is confused you are losing value."
