Toilet Whisperer
Where does your optimism come from?
Every time I discover a toilet in the wild, it tells me something about the world around us. Itâs not always pretty – but by filtering the abandoned and broken through a fluffy cloud and puppy dog lens, it helps the positive nuggets of any situation naturally shine through. And from that positivity comes hope. And itâs hope that creates the optimism.

Can you describe three important qualities, skills or areas of knowledge in your work.
Discovering toilets in the wild requires the confidence to walk into scary allies, an ability to stop quick, turn around, pull over and jump out of a car with the unbridled fortitude to snap away while others look at you like a freak. In Hollywood, this translates into a sniffing out fresh opportunities and coming up with unique ways to put yourself out there to go for it.

Will enough ever be enough?
I was discouraged when Guinness World Records thought the worldâs largest photographic collection of abandoned photographs in the wild (over 1200 at last count) was too weird. But I found new light when the United Nations lauded my âPerfect Lifeâ video for its promotion of clean sanitation around the world. Now, as I continue to log miles all around LA , I still find the thrill of the hunt and desire to capture things in a unique way just as odd and joyful as when I found that first toilet on the side of Hollywood Boulevard.

Whatâs next for Kid Porcelain and the Toilets in the Wild Brand?
Excited about the publication of âThe Adventures of Kid Porcelainâ – itâs a Hollywood story of evolution and metamorphosis. Moving forward, manifesting a promotional tour of toilet-obsessed Japan, a local gallery show, a duet with Skibidi Toilet and an American Standard, Toto or Squatty Potty sponsorship.

Communication skills
We live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
When it comes to communicating, I always attempt to work backwards from the person Iâm interacting with by attempting to understand where they might be coming from on the particular subject and where my communication âfitsâ into the course of that personâs busy day. At that point, I look inside my corporation within and assign the conversation to the most appropriate ME team member. Then, WE just march forward as our best, most natural self.

Tell our readers about yourself.
Inside each of us is a business. And that business contains all the same elements, important decisions and daily dramas that exist at larger corporations.

ME is YOU. Pass it on.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in todayâs highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
⢠Internal strength is key
⢠You be YOU
⢠There is an âiâ in team

What would you advise â going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you arenât as strong to be more well-rounded?
We are who we are. And since itâs just US, we need to do our best to try and steer into our strengths, while also being prepared to âdanceâ in the event the ball hits a leg or bounces another way.

Where do you go to keep going?
Banjo, weâre thrilled to have you share your thoughts and lessons with the Bold Journey community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
When it comes to resilience, I tend to look for lessons from the streets of Los Angeles. I love a good walkabout. And my best thinking and most meaningful interactions come from hoofing through one-off neighborhoods and stumbled-upon alleys and speaking with those I might not normally interact with.
Danny James Moore has been homeless in Hollywood since 1986. Along the way, we would see each other in the oddest places and began to say hello. His lifestyle fascinated me from the start and our chit-chat expanded naturally into more of a rat-a-tat-tat.
One day, we decided to sit for a series of âtalk and tipsâ intended to help people new to living on the streets survive more peacefully and successfully. The hope was also to create an outlet for someone who might normally not be heard by providing a platform that would elevate them to expert status.
Danny and I discussed a wide range of survive on-the-street topics like tents, storage, acceptance, food, family, protecting yourself, getting a good nightâs sleep, finding help, showering, drugs, discrimination, friends, possessions, the bathroom, staying informed, relationships, exercise, sex, trust and more.
As I continue my own journey out there in Hollywood, thinking about Dannyâs resilience â day after day â week after week â season after season and year after year has become a go-to source of âinspirationâ whenever itâs time for myself to dig deep.

In Hollywood – look for the signs
A very long time ago, someone welded a smile to a piece of pipe on the bridge above Lake Hollywood.
One day while on a walkabout,
noticed that a hex bolt had gone missing from this little-known Hollywood gem. It was a small thing, but it made a big difference.

In Hollywood – try to fill gaps
He worried that if no one knew it was even there, how would it ever get fixed? So Banjo rummaged through the nuts and bolts section of Tashmanâs Home Center until he found a similar hex bolt.

In Hollywood – be a little nuts
From there, he hit up Hosepâs Body Shop, where a friendly and talented welder shaved down the top surface.

In Hollywood – be smooth > but not too smooth
Then, Banjo found a third generation Hand Engraver at Gerard Leon Fine Jewelry who was amused by his plan and confident she could finely etch his Tasty Nuggets signature on the surface of the clean hex bolt.

In Hollywood – have your groove on
After a little touch up work for added dimension, Banjo headed back to the reservoir for a discrete installation of his tastiest nugget of all – a smiling Tasty Nuggets badged face overlooking Hollywood with the Hollywood Sign majestically perched in the background. Bam – give the drummer some! It remains there to this day.

In Hollywood – your smile is everything
