Where do you go to keep going?
Banjo, we’re thrilled to have you share your thoughts and lessons with the Bold Journey community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
When it comes to resilience, I tend to look for lessons from the streets of Los Angeles. I love a good walkabout. And my best thinking and most meaningful interactions come from hoofing through one-off neighborhoods and stumbled-upon alleys and speaking with those I might not normally interact with.
Danny James Moore has been homeless in Hollywood since 1986. Along the way, we would see each other in the oddest places and began to say hello. His lifestyle fascinated me from the start and our chit-chat expanded naturally into more of a rat-a-tat-tat.
One day, we decided to sit for a series of ‘talk and tips’ intended to help people new to living on the streets survive more peacefully and successfully. The hope was also to create an outlet for someone who might normally not be heard by providing a platform that would elevate them to expert status.
Danny and I discussed a wide range of survive on-the-street topics like tents, storage, acceptance, food, family, protecting yourself, getting a good night’s sleep, finding help, showering, drugs, discrimination, friends, possessions, the bathroom, staying informed, relationships, exercise, sex, trust and more.
As I continue my own journey out there in Hollywood, thinking about Danny’s resilience – day after day – week after week – season after season and year after year has become a go-to source of ‘inspiration’ whenever it’s time for myself to dig deep.

In Hollywood – look for the signs
A very long time ago, someone welded a smile to a piece of pipe on the bridge above Lake Hollywood.
One day while on a walkabout, noticed that a hex bolt had gone missing from this little-known Hollywood gem. It was a small thing, but it made a big difference.
In Hollywood – try to fill gaps
He worried that if no one knew it was even there, how would it ever get fixed? So Banjo rummaged through the nuts and bolts section of Tashman’s Home Center until he found a similar hex bolt.
In Hollywood – be a little nuts
From there, he hit up Hosep’s Body Shop, where a friendly and talented welder shaved down the top surface.
In Hollywood – be smooth > but not too smooth
Then, Banjo found a third generation Hand Engraver at Gerard Leon Fine Jewelry who was amused by his plan and confident she could finely etch his Tasty Nuggets signature on the surface of the clean hex bolt.
In Hollywood – have your groove on
After a little touch up work for added dimension, Banjo headed back to the reservoir for a discrete installation of his tastiest nugget of all – a smiling Tasty Nuggets badged face overlooking Hollywood with the Hollywood Sign majestically perched in the background. Bam – give the drummer some! It remains there to this day.
In Hollywood – your smile is everything
